Interview with a do it all type of Artist: Georgina Baillie

I am a lover of all things related to Art, when I look at Georgina Baillie\’s body of work I am in complete awe. There\’s a synergy within Georgina\’s oil paintings mixed background coloured lines, and the faces or body parts they ensconce which highlight the nuance between the detailing of the inside image and the backgrounds Georgina creates. Not only does Georgina paint multi-hued pieces of various subjects but also acts in her own series, a period sitcom entitled Fanny Business. The first episode of Fanny Business is utterly witty, and so incredibly comical. I could not stop laughing, the manner in which Georgina depicts a housewife is quite clever and incredibly thought-provoking. Especially considering modern-day gender roles in comparison to the 1950s. Regardless of the decade, the essential discussion pertaining to \’normal\’ gender roles in 2020 needs to be tossed out the window. Women are just as capable of doing anything a man can do and it\’s about time women, feel that global support from all corners of our very round world. RMMW: Do you have any artist\’s rituals before starting a new piece?

GB: I find the starting really hard, I have to make sure I\’ve got all the colours I want on my palette, I have all the brushes clean and out and a free few hours!

RMMW: We all must deal with an inner critic, how do you contend with yours?

GB: Tell it to fuck off!

RMMW: Have you ever been creatively blocked? If yes, how did you overcome it?

GB: I usually get creative block if I’m drinking as I’m turning off most of my brain and as an alcoholic, in recovery, it ruins everything in my life. As long as I stay sober and do the next right thing, my higher power provides me with all the creativity I need! So far…

RMMW: Please tell me about the origin story of Fanny Business.

GB: It came to my head one day while I was doing HIIT and I didn’t really know much about it except I had a picture of the character in my head, it has been a great opportunity to purge some crazy out of me.

RMMW: What do you want your viewers to take away from Fanny Business with regards to gender roles from the \’50s in comparison to those from our technological world of 2020?

GB: Having dipped my toe into the dating world I found that unfortunately there are still many men out there with a 50s view of what a woman is/should be. Even my dear friend Christella who is 10 years my junior has told me that her peer group has its chauvinists which I was surprised and disappointed to hear.

RMMW: As an artist who has experimented with different art mediums, which one is your favourite? And why?

GB: Acrylic painting because I find it easiest to convey my emotions with vibrant colours.

RMMW: Do you have a favourite artist\’s tool?

GB: Pointed soft brushes 💯

RMMW: Where do you hope to see Fanny Business in the next 3-5 years?

GB: I live in today.

RMMW: Which subject will be your favourite to explore in future episodes of Fanny Business: Fanny\’s Cooking Tips, Fanny\’s Laundry Tips, Fanny\’s Fashion Tips, Fanny\’s Beauty Tips, Fanny\’s Guide To Pets, Fanny\’s Cleaning Tips, or Fanny\’s Movie Picks? And why?

GB: Well, since I have also found men who won’t hear about periods we are planning an episode parodying this.

RMMW: Back in the 50\’s women were not really able to express themselves, do you feel modern-day women are in the same boat or do you feel it has evolved over those decades?

GB: Yes we have of course evolved. However, I still think there is a huge divide on the whole double standard in society about sex — the ancient idea that if a woman is sexually promiscuous she is a whore but, if a man is he’s a hero — I’m fucking sick of it.
